Futon Frames
Starting out as a replica of a traditional Japanese item, futon frames are now widely employed in contemporary living. In the past, the Americans immediately saw a potential upon their discovery of the oriental piece. If back in the land of rising sun, the mattress was only beneficial to the locals for their moonlight slumber, today, the cushion is now a furniture functional at just about at any occasion. Eighties
The advent of futon frames began by the efforts of William Brouwer and Irv Wieder. Their partnership was able to invent a convertible furniture whereby in 1983, they received a Dove Award for the category of Best New Design. The first ever structure was constructed out of maple and cherry. A single model was sold ranging between $600 to $2, 000. Even at that early, there were already imitations that consumers obtained for as low as $99. The second major progress of a futon frame happened in 1985 when Ron Massey created his own version called T.H.I.S. Nineties
Since the above accounts occurred in the eighties, it is now time to look into the growth of futon frame in the nineties. The period was the arrival of the bi- fold frame and tri- fold frame. Bi- fold frame creases the mattress once in the center and turns out as a couch. Tri- fold frame tucks the cushion once employing the width as a sofa. You may be asking which of the two types of futon is advantageous, bi- fold is believed to be more valuable than tri- fold because there is a bigger seating area.
Tri- fold Frames
Tri- fold frames were initially conceptualized than bi- fold frames. Tri- fold frames have two kinds. The first had legs similar to that of “Firefly” by Liforms, “Cheapy Sleepy” by Welcome Homes, “G- 2” by Nikita Grigoriev and “A- Frame” by Opel, among the others. The second had no legs which is the most basic. Directly positioned on the ground, these were typically manufactured from poplar and pine which were flexible to be either finished in stain or paint.
Bi- fold Frames
Bi- fold frames were only second to tri- fold frames. However, these were the more improved adaptation. There were also two types such as those with arms and legs then those that rest directly on the ground. The first category was found to be favorable so more enhancements came along. There was the incorporation of the “slider” mechanism that made the furniture much easy to be modified either as a sofa or cot. The introduction of diverse lounging positions also followed.
Be it tri- fold or bi- fold, futon frame beds were already established then. These were very beneficial especially to those people who were residing in apartments that wanted to save space because their quarters had constricted dimensions. The furnitures were also popular in college dormitories where students had an option to retire at night after an exhausting day or engage in hearty conversations by day, all in a single fixture.
