Bedspreads

If you'd like to do away with bedskirts or dust ruffles for some reason, then you can absolutely still have that complete look for your bed by using bedspreads. Bedspreads make a perfect ensemble that serve dual purposes: for a comfortable wide blanket and aesthetic. Who wouldn't want to treat herself/himself like royalty with elegantly designed bedpreads?

What are bedspreads? These are bedding components that serve more like a comforter but created with an extra width that goes down to the floor covering the entire bed. In this case, bedskirts are no longer required.

However, in the last couple of decades, as comforters grew in popularity, the availability of bedspreads with interesting and alluring designs have been increasingly limited in most department stores – and the prices are usually high. Another problem that buyers need to contend with is to look for matching accessories like pillows and shams to go with the bedspread.

Nonetheless, while comforters may seem attractive in most settings, many still prefer the simplicity of bedspreads when it comes to design and care, especially with chenille bedspread. You might prefer the latter when designing a guest room to achieve cleaner lines from a single bed covering.

Two Types Of Bedspreads

If you think all bedspreads look entirely the same, you can think again. In general, there are two types of bedspreads that are hopefully still available in retail outlets: those made of chenille and from Thomasville.

Chenille is a type of cotton fabric with fine thread count, that is available in contemporary designs and bright colors but colonial style chenille bedspreads can still be found if you want to create a medieval look for a room. To complete the theme, you can use matching accessories such as round table covers and curtains.

The popularity of chenille bedspreads came in the 1970's when commercialization of the fabric began, but fabric companies began manufacturing it since the 1930's. In order for chenille bedspreads to last longevity and also to protect the colors, proper care is vital so you can enjoy them for a longer time. When it's time to clean the bed cover, have it dry cleaned. If dry cleaning is not feasible, the chenille fabric can be washed using a washing machine but take care not hang the bedspread if air-dried.

To achieve a more formal look you can go for cotton jacquard tailored bedspreads with raised-design that are excellent coverlettes, which are available in varying sizes. As you would the other beds, accessorize the bed with matching pillow shams for a stylish and an elegant finish.

Thomasville bedspreads can be found in fitted-or-throw quilted design in many vibrant colors. Bedspreads of this type feature finished hems and self-cord welting and employ polyester or cotton lining. You can achieve a more charming look by accessorizing with pillow shams and throws, which can be found in any store. As much as it provides comfort, Thomasville bedspreads are convenient to use because they are machine washable.

Since bedspreads can be difficult to find these days, other companies like Nettle Creek can have them custom-made for you. How the bedspread will look is dependent on your selection, style, size, colors, type, etc. The company can send you fabric and style samples for you to choose from, and then handcraft the bedspread for you. So if you were captivated by a bedspread design from an old movie you can make that a reality.

Although bedspreads are no longer the trend these days, it pays to go against the flow for a unique look for your room and give it a colonial aura. After all, it is never hard to achieve an elegant look if you know how to mix and match bedding designs and styles. And the bedskirts? Well, you can save them for other days.
