Bed Rests
Are you experiencing pains at your back? Most often than not, you would resolve to have bed rests in order to alleviate the condition. However, recent studies show that the therapeutic benefits of bedrests are put into question. This may really sound as a surprise especially that bedrest is known to be a traditional treatment for problems in the lower lumbar area. MJ Wilkinson of the University of Birmingham currently made a research entitled, “Does forty- eight hours’ bed rest influence the outcome of acute low back pain?”
The aim of the study by MJ Wilkinson was to establish the effectivity of forty- eight hours’ bed rest in the result of healing acute low back pain. To ascertain the research on bedrest, he employed the randomized monitored trial. The subjects were told to keep still and not to take any bedrests in the morning. General practitioners based in the West Midlands got forty- two patients between the ages of sixteen to sixty. Twenty were allowed to have bed rests while twenty- two acted as controls.
In comparison, the twenty people who had bed rests had greater Roland- Morris points in the seventh day. There was not much of a difference between the two parties especially in the aspect of straight leg raise. However, the other twenty- two who were categorized as controls had better flexibility in the lower lumbar area as compared to those that experienced bedrests. The development in the scores from day one down to day seven was the same with only zero or one but the second batch that was not permitted to have bedrest had full recovery than those that had bed rest.
Basing in the study conducted by MJ Wilkinson, it arrived at a conclusion that there was no indication whatsoever that bed rests were not superior as a remedy to pains in the back. The forty- eight hours’ bedrests therefore, cannot be advised in medicating the condition as presented by the small research. When you refer to a larger definitive examination on the premise of a bedrest, there is a call for clinical detections. This does not in any manner relay the insignificance of bed rest though.
Micheal Wilkes, editor of Western Journal of Medicine, said that “there is strong evidence that prolonged bed rest does not improve the outcome.” He was referring to the days absent from the office brought about by the aches in the lower lumbar area. It was in a way justified when there was a survey done by the University of Washington. They inquired among the thousands of doctors about the management of pains in the back. Majority believed in the use of longer bedrest hand in hand with narcotics and relaxants. In spite of the copious scientific investigations designed to aid the physician in nursing the condition, it is said that they still have unproved beliefs way back in the nineteenth century.
On another note, if you are talking about the luxurious comfort of bed rests sans the bodily disorders, you can really distinguish how fortunate these times are in contrast to the olden epochs. It was even written that there was a “barbaric period” when people were only sleeping on linens manufactured from thick polyester called crimplene. However that is no longer the issue as the personal space is characterized as “yachts of the home.” Thanks to the array of accessories including puffy comforters, plumped mattresses, ornamented pillows and cottony blankets. These altogether define an elegant type of bedrests in the millennium.
Up to this juncture, there is no clarity whether bed rests are relief or distress. However, it has always been stressed to actively participate in exercise programs that are geared towards holistic enhancement.
