Purchasing a mattress without a bed may be economical for some people but placing a mattress directly on the floor is not only awkward, but also unsanitary. To do away with this scenario, a bed frame is used, in place of an entire bed purchase, to suspend your mattress off the floor. This way, you can avoid dirt, draft, or pests from reaching you while asleep.

Bed frames, also called Hollywood frames, typically have feet with glides, wheels (castors) or rollers attached to the legs and used to support your mattress without having to use a headboard or footboard. However, bed frames may be used with a headboard attached to it.

Bed frames are manufactured in sizes similar to mattresses such as Single, Twin or Full Size, Full or Queen Size, Queen, King, or Californian King. The number of legs of bed frames depends on its size – the three largest ones commonly has six legs to amply support larger mattresses.

You can choose between metal or wood bed frames, consisting of a head, side rails, and foot. Bed frames made to fit under larger mattresses have central rails to bear the weight of the mattress as well as the box spring.

As much as bed frames are available in a variety of sizes, there are also different kinds of bed frames. A trundle bed frame, for instance, is the bottom bed frame that slides below a highly suspended bed frame. The trundle bed frame does not work with box spring version bed frames since it needs a bigger space to fit under. A trundle can be bought separately and you can likewise buy a mattress that fits it.

Trundle beds are the perfect solution for sleepovers in case your room doesn't have some extra space. This bed has casters attached underneath it to facilitate sliding under a higher bed. Similar to the standard bed frames, trundles are also made of wood or steel. The key to placing a trundle bed under your regular bed is make sure the latter is big enough to hide a smaller bed underneath it. However, you may be able to find a mattress specifically made for trundle beds.

There is also such a thing as platform bed frames. Platform bed frames usually have stylish headboards or side rails that easily complements to your beddings – whether you want old-fashioned or futuristic designs. Platform beds are sold in wooden or metal frames and comes in many beautiful classical or contemporary designs – the choice is yours.

Platform bed frames with side rails are great to use in little children's rooms to avoid them to accidentally fall off the bed. Platform bed frames are great if you want to buy a mattress separately, that is, if you're not satisfied with the mattresses sold together with the bed. Metal or wood bed frames are sold as a whole piece but may be disassembled for portability.

If you need a taller bed, may be so you can make a storage space under the bed, there is such a thing called a bed riser. Bed frame risers are merely legs where the original leg of a bed frame can be attached. Bed riser lengths add about three inches to 4.5 inches long to your current bed frame length. High quality bed risers should be made of solid angle iron to be assured of the support you need. You can choose from bed risers with wheels or flat-bottomed.
